What the furnace came to understand

The furnace spent the night whispering through the ductwork from its corner of the basement.   Eventually it had heard its own voice so much, had listened so intently to the metallic reverberation of its single throaty syllable, that by the time the light of morning came seeping sideways and anemic, reflected off the frozen snow of the driveway and through the slit-eyed windows at the top of the foundation, the furnace had convinced itself it was right.
